She stared at him, surprised.
'Do you agree?' 
He nodded.
She smiled. He smiled back.

In the end, he accepts that she goes first, not because he loves her less... 
He accepts it because he understands that she cannot live without him, and therefore, she would not be able to live knowing that he has left... 
He, however, knows that he is capable of bearing the pain of her absence, simply because he does not want her to bear the pain of his absence."
